It is becoming embarrassingly common to visit premises where an extinguisher or fire alarm company has carried out the fire risk assessment for the client. This reveals that companies have been recommending expensive fire alarm systems or a lot of extinguishers they did not need.
There is a clear duty on the ‘Responsible Person’ to confirm the competency of any fire risk assessor whom they appoint to conduct a fire risk assessment of their building. It is therefore always recommended by the Fire and Rescue Services that the ‘Responsible Person’ choose fire risk assessors with the proper level of competence and who are third party accredited. It is unclear at present how long the situation will continue where ‘fire risk assessors’ who are not part of any third-party accredited scheme (and, therefore, unable to adequately demonstrate competence to a client) be allowed to continue. This will probably occur when all insurance companies specify this to insure premises in the future.
Using an existing third-party accredited scheme shows that CSAR Fire Ltd have fire risk assessors that are competent, and this must be a practical way forward for clients. Under the BAFE SP205 scheme CSAR Fire Ltd receives external examination of the company by independent inspectors, who have no direct conflicts of interest. By seeking approval, certification and validation from a third party must add an even greater level of acceptability and confidence for the client knowing that the fire risk assessment, which is required to be undertaken, will be conducted by competent fire risk assessors.
